Polarized upconversion luminescence from a single LiLuF4:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystal for orientation tracking

Polarized upconversion luminescence (UCL) of lanthanide-doped micro/nano-crystals has shown great promise in single-particle tracking and super-resolution bioimaging. However, because the spectral line broadening multiple sites lanthanide particles (UCPs), crystal-field (CF) polarization components UCL are usually undistinguishable. Herein, we report linearly polarized LiLuF4:Yb3+/Er3+ single microcrystals with resolvable CF transition lines a degree up to 0.82. The levels Er3+, as well their emission anisotropy, unraveled for first time through low-temperature high-resolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. By taking advantage well-resolved highly-polarized demonstrate application anisotropic probes orientation tracking. These findings provide fundamental insights into anisotropy particles, thus laying foundation future design luminescent towards versatile applications.

Luminescence from crystals is often anisotropic and it leads to the polarization behavior of luminescence from single crystalline particles, as exemplified here with the upconversion luminescence from a single NaYF4 nanodisk.
